Many thanks to all who replied to my query on- and off-list. The prevailing hypothesis in the replies I have received is that the inscription is written in a pseudo-script mimicking Middle Persian characters, perhaps also reminiscent of an unidentified Indian script.

Many thanks for your suggestions.
Best wishes,

Marco

Some shapes resemble Middle Persian characters, but not more than that, and the remaining ones surely are not MP. If one wants, one can also find some similarities to letters of other scripts, but nothing coherent.
