[INDOLOGY] a statement about respectable women

Dear list members,

In a private reply to my query I was made aware that in certain areas of
India, just a few decades ago, females, regardless of their age, were not
supposed to be seen sleeping by unrelated men.

This urges me to provide a specification with regard to the prescription I
mentioned in my first message.
I believe that the sentence I encountered is rather about being a good,
reliable housewife, namely one who rises before everyone else to make sure,
for instance, that breakfast is ready before others wake up, and who in the
evening attends to the needs of others (e.g. makes sure that the small
children of the household fall asleep, helps the elderly of the household
to their beds, etc.) before finally going to sleep.
This is, I believe, what that sentence hints at.

All the best,
Gaia Pintucci
