Unfortunately the computer hardware prices came down too rapidly.
Had IBM1400 etc with 6 bit characters remained standard for a few more
years there would remained only capital letters as was the case in 60s.
With 8bit characters, the inertia set in and it became impossible to get rid of
the redundancy.
